Owensboro and Evansville Telegraph Company

From History of Owensboro

This company was organized in September, 1875, as a stock association, with a capital of $2,500, shares at $50. James Weir was elected President and John W. Porter, Secretary, Treasurer and Superintendent. The stock was immediately taken, and the line at once put up, and business commenced.

In the summer of 1876, they entered into a contract with the Western Union Telegraph Company, since which time they have co-operated. Present officers: S. D. Kennady, President; John W. Porter, same offices as at the first. It will be inferred from the foregoing facts that Mr. Porter is the prime mover and supporter of the present telegraph facilities which Owensboro enjoys.
