Company History
Years of Operation: 1883-1951
The origin of this company dates back to the 1860's with a blacksmith shop in eastern Owensboro owned by James P. Troutman and Peter Rarick. The Owensboro Wagon Company formally began in 1883 on the east side of Leitchfield Road, north of East Forth Street. Up to one hundred wagons per day were produced with signs on the sides and back that simply read, "The OwensborO." These wagons were known as the "Rolls-Royce of farm wagons" and were sold in 22 states and in Cuba, Mexico, and South America. A top-of-the-line "OwensborO" wagon sold for $826 at the turn of the century.
The first couple of years, the company averaged about 325 wagons per year and employed between 100-125 people. During its peak in 1910, the company was producing 30,000 wagons and 10,000 buggies a year. It employed 350 men and 14 traveling salesmen for a line of products that included farm wagons, spring wagons, four- and eight-wheel log wagons, dump carts, drays, buggies and surreys.
Workers were among the best paid in Owensboro, historian Lee Dew says, earning $1.37 for 1/2 a day in the 1890's for a 60-hour week.
The factory had the first time clock in Owensboro. And its employees formed the city's first workers' mutual aid society in 1891.
By the 1940's, the company had converted to manufacturing trailers for trucks. By the time it closed in 1951, the plant was making "coolie carts" for China.
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 million "OwensborO" wagons rolled off the line there in nearly 70 years of production.
