Spice Knob was a community located at the junction of KY 1389 and Graves Lane. The name came from the practice of Native Americans gathering spicy herbs on the two hills in the area. The area was originally settled by Warden and Ann Riddle. Soon other families settled nearby, especially the Wells and Shouse families.
A school was soon established, reputed to be the first in the county. It is said that children sometimes encountered buffalo as they walked to school.
Two grocery stores later opened in Spice Knob, as well as a post office.
Lockhart Riddle drove Daviess County’s first school bus, a 1926 Chevrolet.
In 1929 the Spice Knob bus line was established, and in 1937 electric service began.
