In April 1881 the newspaper reported that the it was a live, progressive village with three blacksmith shops, one drug store, one grocery, one dry goods store and an undertaker. There were four stock dealers and one doctor residing in the community. The local school was taught by Miss Fannie Westerfield, an accomplished lady and experienced teacher.
