Kentucky Wesleyan College began as the dream
of Kentucky Methodists in the early days of the
Commonwealth and in 1858, the college was founded at
Millersburg. Classes began in 1866 following the Civil War. The
College moved to Winchester in 1890 and soon became one the
first institutions of higher learning in Kentucky to admit women.

The Wesleyan story in Owensboro began in the late 1940s
when Talmage Hocker and “Ham” Glenn, cornerstones of the
Alumni Club in the city, along with V. E. Anderson, Marshall
Barnes, T. J. Bartlett, Ed Gipe, Delbert Glenn, Lawrence Hager,
D. D. Heltsley, Harry Holder Sr., John Medley, William O’Bryan,
W. H. Parker, E. Kelley Short and J. W. Snyder, led the effort to
bring the college to Owensboro from Winchester.

The campus relocated to Owensboro in 1951 with classes
in numerous buildings downtown, including Settle Memorial
and First Christian churches, with an auditorium at Seventh and
Frederica and the library at City Hall. The present campus, then
in the countryside south of town, opened in 1954.

Today, Wesleyan offers almost 40 majors and graduates are
admitted to prestigious graduate and professional programs of
choice nationwide. The college’s most popular majors include
the sciences, education, psychology, music, criminal justice and
criminology, and business administration and accounting.
Kentucky Wesleyan student-athletes compete in 17 NCAA
Division II sports in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, and
they consistently earn academic honors. The men’s basketball
team has won eight national championships.

Over 2,500 Wesleyan graduates live and work in Owensboro/
Daviess County. Barton D. Darrell ’84 became the thirty-fourth
president of the college in 2014.<ref name="heritage" /> More than 88 percent of our faculty have a Ph.D. or terminal degree.<ref name="kwc-about" /> Kentucky Wesleyan is a United
Methodist-related institution and is recognized for excellence annually
by Princeton Review, U. S. News and World Report and
Washington Monthly.

Since 1951, Kentucky Wesleyan College has impacted thousands
of graduates and its graduates have, in turn, impacted
countless people. The Wesleyan influence is immeasurable.<ref name="heritage" />

The first services were held at the home of W. Coomes, one a month, about a mile below town and by Rev. Wathen. By 1883, the congregation was comprised of 235 families, and the first church buliding was 3 blocks west of the courthouse on the SW corner of 2nd & Cedar.

St. Stephen Cathedral, established in 1839, was the first parish in the city of [[Owensboro]]. The present church was built in 1924 and remains the largest Catholic Church and parish in the city. Membership is approximately 600 households.
A Brief History of St Stephen Cathedral:
*1822-1839 – The mission years. Mission priests celebrated Mass in the homes of the early settlers in Daviess County
*1839 – The first St. Stephen Church was built at Second and Cedar Streets. Reverend John C. Wathen was appointed pastor of the new church.
*1849 – The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth opened [[St. Francis Academy]], the first school in [[Daviess County]]
*1856 – A second and larger St. Stephen Church was built at the same location.
*1924 – 1926 – The third St. Stephen Church was built at 610 Locust Street. The artisans who designed the church were foreseeing that one day our church would be called “Cathedral.”
*1937 – Pope Pius XI created the Diocese of Owensboro.
*1938 – Pope Pius XI designated Most Reverend Francis R. Cotton as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro, and St. Stephen Church as his Cathedral.
*1938 – Reverend Anthony Higdon was the first priest to be ordained from St. Stephen Cathedral.
*1939 – We celebrated 100 years as a parish and the first parish school was opened at 7th and Frederica Streets for grades 1-5.
*1947 – [[Blessed Sacrament]] Chapel established as a mission church.
*1951 – [[Owensboro Catholic High School]] opened.
*1962 – A new St. Stephen Cathedral parish school opened at 600 Locust Street.
*1989 – Owensboro parochial schools consolidated; St. Angela Merici became the designated school for our parish children and St. Stephen Cathedral Preschool opened.
*1989 – We celebrated 150 years as a parish!
*2004 – St. Stephen Cathedral parish held its first annual Parish Picnic. The first Capital Campaign “Preservation for the Next Generation” was opened to renew and refurbish the parish facilities.
*2011 – Work continues on plans for the interior renovation of the Cathedral.
*2012 – The newly renovated Cathedral was re-opened and the new altar dedicated on November 18, 2012.
